Woolly Tales & Yarns from a Spinner’s Flock of Ouessant Sheep

Inspired by Kerry’s beautiful lace shawls knit from fine spindle-spun Ouessant wool, I’ve decided to take the plunge ! For the past few weeks I’ve been spinning with this lovely little spindle made by Lynn and sold on etsy.

Of corse, it must be said that spindle spinning is a bit slower than spinning on a wheel.

But that being said, one shouldn’t forget the advantages of using this ancient tool. First, a spindle is light-weight and easy to transport. Additionally, the very modest price of a spindle is a far cry from the current ticket price of a spinning wheel.

Finally, as Kerry’s spindling and knitting so beautifully demonstrate, spindle spinning can produce truly marvelous pieces of hand-work.

It is also interesting to keep in mind that traditionally on the Island of Ouessant, wool was in fact spindle-spun and not wheel spun.

Today there are only a few spinners left on the Island. But the women who do continue to spin the wool produced by their sheep still use the traditional Ouessant spindle. A few year ago, I had the privilege of meeting one of these exceptional women who are keeping alive the tradition of spindle-spinning on the Island of Ouessant.

Needless to say, during my time on the Island, I was able to purchase a couple of traditional Ouessant spindles along with the traditional spindle holder.

Long live the tradition !

Vive la tradition !
